UP: Paper leak hoax, 80 WhatsApp-Telegram groups, '50% discount' for women; How were 35000 people cheated?

A fraudster who claimed to have leaked the police recruitment exam paper in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh has been arrested by the UP STF. This fraudster had created a WhatsApp group in the name of 'Inspector Hansraj' and was charging Rs 1000 from male students and Rs 500 from female students to add them to this group. The accused was claiming that the paper would be made available to this group 24 hours before the police recruitment exam. Similarly, the accused cheated people by creating a group on the Telegram app.

According to UP STF, the arrested accused has been identified as Hans Ranjan Kumar, a resident of Khagaria, Bihar. The accused was carrying out this type of fraud while staying in Varanasi Cantt. According to STF officials, the police are making students aware to conduct the police recruitment examination fairly. In this sequence, STF received information that there is a WhatsApp group named Inspector Hansraj, in which it is being claimed that the exam paper has been leaked.

On this information, STF laid a trap and arrested the accused by tracing the location of the WhatsApp number. During police interrogation, the accused said that till now he has added 35000 people to the group. He said that till now he has cheated thousands of people by creating more than 80 WhatsApp and Telegram groups for various examinations. For this, the accused used to know in advance which exams were to be held and where their centers were to be located.

After preparing its details, the accused used to circulate it among the competitive students and then, claiming to have leaked the question paper, he used to collect Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 from the students. The accused used to claim that the people associated with his group or channel would get the question paper 24 hours before the exam. However, after the exam, the accused used to delete that group or channel. During police interrogation, the accused said that till now he has collected more than Rs. 20 lakh in the police recruitment exam alone.
