What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pneumonia causes inflammation of your lung tissue and may cause fluid or pus in the lungs. Bacterial pneumonia is usually more serious than viral pneumonia.

Can pneumonia become sepsis?

Any type of infection can cause sepsis. These include bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, which more commonly cause sepsis, including lung infections such as pneumonia.

What is sepsis?

According to the CDC, this is a life-threatening medical condition. Sepsis occurs when there is already an infection in the body that triggers a chain reaction throughout the body. Most cases of sepsis begin before the patient goes to the hospital. Infections that cause sepsis often begin in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract.

How does sepsis occur?

When germs enter a person's body, they cause infection. In such a situation, when you are not able to stop that infection, it becomes the cause of sepsis. Bacterial infections cause most cases of sepsis. Most people with sepsis have at least one underlying medical condition, such as chronic lung disease or a weakened immune system.

When do symptoms of sepsis appear?

As the attack of sepsis infection goes out of control, it starts damaging the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs. This can also be fatal. The initial symptoms of sepsis appear about 12 hours before organ failure and death. Due to this one out of every three patients dies.
