Separatist leader Sarjan Barkati, who filed nomination from jail for the Jammu Kashmir elections, will not be able to contest the elections. His nomination has been rejected. Sarjan Barkati is currently in jail in a funding case. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief over the cancellation of his candidature. She has also said that the Election Commissioner will have to give reasons for doing so.

Separatist leaders are also entering the fray for the assembly elections to be held in three phases in Jammu and Kashmir. In this series, Maulvi Sarjan Ahmed also filed his nomination. His nomination filed from the Jainpora assembly constituency was canceled after scrutiny. Maulvi Sarjan Ahmed is also known as Sarjan Barkati. After the cancellation of the nomination, his family says that they will challenge this decision in court.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief over the cancellation of Sarjan Barkati's nomination from Jainpora. She said that the Election Commissioner will have to explain why this decision was taken. Democracy is a battle of ideas. Everyone should be given a chance to participate in it.

Sarjan Barkati was arrested by the NIA last year in a funding case. Barkati was most talked about in 2016. Sarjan played a key role in the protests that took place after Burhan Wani's death. This protest lasted for more than three months. After Sarjan's arrest, his wife was also arrested.

Apart from Sarjan Barkati, who filed nominations for the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the nomination papers of 25 other candidates have also been rejected. A total of 280 candidates had filed nomination papers for the first phase, after scrutiny, a total of 26 of these nomination papers were rejected. Other nomination papers are also being scrutinized.
