His nomination filed from the Jainpora assembly constituency was canceled after scrutiny. Maulvi Sarjan Ahmed is also known as Sarjan Barkati. After the cancellation of the nomination, his family says that they will challenge this decision in court.

Apart from Sarjan Barkati, who filed nominations for the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the nomination papers of 25 other candidates have also been rejected. A total of 280 candidates had filed nomination papers for the first phase, after scrutiny, a total of 26 of these nomination papers were rejected. Other nomination papers are also being scrutinized.
