The battle for assembly elections has begun in Jammu and Kashmir. Union Minister and BJP in-charge of the state G Kishan Reddy has attacked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's statement on electricity. G Kishan Reddy said that Rahul Gandhi had no idea about the electricity situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Rahul Gandhi has spread confusion among the people regarding electricity.

He said that earlier governments knew that there was a potential of 18000 MW hydroelectricity generation but it was never used. He said that due to the neglect of Congress at the center and the National Conference and PDP in the state, only 3,400 MW of this potential could be used in 70 years. The state has added only 1197 MW of electricity.

Power deficit to be 7.5% in 2023-24

G. Kishan Reddy said that during the year 2023-24, about Rs 9500 crore has to be spent on purchasing electricity through Jammu and Kashmir Power Corporation Limited to meet the electricity demand of common people, commercial units, and industry in the state. The central government is engaged in meeting the energy needs of the state. The power deficit of Jammu and Kashmir has decreased from 17.8% during the year 2018-19 to 7.5% during the year 2023-24.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had said in an election rally that Jammu and Kashmir is providing electricity to the rest of the country but the residents here are paying higher electricity bills than the rest of the country.

Regarding his statement, G Kishan Reddy said that this is a lie. It should be refuted. The ground reality here tells a different story.

G Kishan Reddy said that for the last decade, the Modi government has been working on a war footing to increase the power generation capacity in Jammu and Kashmir. A target has been set to increase the capacity by 3,014 MW by 2025-26. 4 mega hydro projects will be started here.
