The Supreme Court has directed all states and union territories to provide complete information about open prisons. The apex court has given four weeks to all states and union territories to provide complete information about open prisons and their functioning.

In semi-open or open prisons, convicts are allowed to work outside the premises during the day to earn a livelihood and return in the evening. This concept was introduced to assimilate the convicts with society and reduce psychological pressure. At the same time, the Supreme Court has asked all the states to report on this within four weeks.

This is a solution to the problem of overcrowding in prisons

The concept of semi-open or open prisons was introduced to assimilate the convicts with society and reduce the psychological pressure, as they face difficulties in leading a normal life outside. At the same time, in its last hearing, the Supreme Court had said that apart from solving the problem of overcrowding in prisons, it also addresses the issue of rehabilitation of prisoners.

While hearing the case on May 9, the Supreme Court said that one solution to the problem of overcrowding in prisons could be to set up open-air prisons/camps. The bench of judges hearing the case said, "One solution to the problem of overcrowding in prisons could be to set up open-air prisons/camps. This system is working efficiently in the state of Rajasthan."

States should submit complete information within four weeks

At the same time, on August 20, the Supreme Court bench directed the states and union territories to provide complete information about open jails. The bench said, 'We direct that all those states and union territories which have not yet given their response, should submit the complete information within four weeks from today.
