Mahakumbh 2025 Dates

The Mahakumbh Mela will begin on January 13, 2025, and end on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri on February 26, 2025.

History of Maha Kumbh

The tradition of Maha Kumbh is deeply rooted in the Vedic period and revolves around bathing in holy rivers to wash away sins and attain salvation. The origin of this festival is linked to the ancient legend of Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean).

According to legend, when Sage Durvasa cursed the gods, they lost their divine powers and the demon king Bali took over the three worlds. The gods sought the help of Lord Vishnu, who advised them to churn the ocean to obtain nectar.

The Samudra Manthan was a joint effort of the gods (devas) and demons (asuras). Eventually, the Amrit emerged in a pot (kumbha). A fierce battle ensued between the gods and the demons for its possession. To protect the Amrit, Lord Vishnu entrusted his vehicle Garuda with its protection.

When Garuda flew with the pot, the drops of nectar fell at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. These sites became the sites of the Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years. The 12-day celestial battle between the Devas and Asuras is believed to correspond to 12 human years, thereby beginning this cycle.

Significance of Maha Kumbh

During Maha Kumbh, devotees perform Kalpavas, bathe in the Ganga and meditate. It is believed that these acts wash away the sins accumulated over a lifetime, leading to a peaceful and prosperous life.

With its rich spiritual and historical significance, the Maha Kumbh 2025 promises to be a spectacular celebration of faith, tradition and devotion.
