Good initiative: Transgenders will get equal opportunity in Odisha, the government has made a new policy

The Odisha government has come up with a policy to provide equal opportunities to transgenders in all the offices of the nodal department in the state. The notification issued by the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) stipulates the designation of an officer as a Grievance Officer for redressal of grievances of transgender people within 15 days from the date of receipt of such complaints.

The notification issued by the nodal agency states that the Head of the Department will take action on the inquiry report submitted by the Grievance Officer within a fortnight. The policy was notified in accordance with the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and rules framed under the Act.

The notification states that the government shall provide equal employment opportunities to all irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, color, disability, marital status, nationality, race, and religion in all its offices. The new policy will also ensure that the work environment is free from any discrimination against transgender persons.

Also, it states that action will be taken against any employee who violates this policy under the code of conduct prescribed in the service rules. To ensure a conducive environment for transgender people, the SSEPD department will create systems and procedures to ensure that they are not discriminated against in terms of status, level of training, promotion, and transfer.

It may be mentioned that in June this year, the Odisha Police Recruitment Board had allowed transgenders to apply for the post of sub-inspector. Officials said 26 transgender candidates submitted online applications for 477 vacancies.
