HIV Annual Shot Clinical Trial: HIV is a dangerous infection that ruins people's lives. If HIV infection spreads too much, it can lead to a deadly disease called AIDS. To avoid HIV, people have to take pills daily and injections from time to time. People who are at a higher risk of HIV need to take continuous treatment. However, now scientists have given a good news. In the clinical trial of a new research, an injection to protect against HIV has proved effective. This injection needs to be given only once a year.
According to BBC Report , this HIV-protective injection can be administered once a year and can be beneficial for high-risk individuals. Such people currently need to take pills daily or injections every other month to avoid HIV. The new injection Lenacapavir has proven effective in Stage 1 clinical trials. Research has shown that an intramuscular injection called Lenacapavir is safe for preventing HIV infection and its presence in the body remains for at least 56 weeks. This can prevent HIV.
This study has been published in a medical journal called 'Lancet'. In this research, 40 HIV-free people were given lenacapavir injection, which was injected into the muscle. No side effects or safety related problems were found with this injection. Even after 56 weeks, the drug remained detectable in their body. Currently, people can take pills daily or take injections every eight weeks to take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). These drugs can help reduce the risk of HIV. PrEP pills are very effective, but taking them every day can be difficult for some people. According to the most recent data of 2023, about 3.90 crore people are living with HIV, of which 65% live in the African region.
