In the notice issued by the Center, it has been said that they have received complaints regarding circulation of obscene, pornographic content by some OTT platforms and social media publishers.
Amid the India's Got Latent controversy, the Centre has issued a notice to OTT platforms. In this notice, these platforms have been instructed to follow the code of conduct. Under the IT Rules (2021), there is a warning to follow the code of conduct and ensure critical self-regulation and implement access control to prevent children from consuming 'A' rated content.
Notice issued to OTT platforms
This notice from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has come amidst the controversial episode of the stand-up comedy show 'India's Got Latent' in which Ranveer Allahabadia made 'obscene' comments. Following the government's order, that episode of the show was removed from YouTube.
"Content should be circulated according to the law"
The government stressed that as per the law, OTT platforms should not circulate any content that is prohibited. Content should be classified on the basis of age. The notice states that as per the rules, the self-regulatory bodies of OTT platforms should ensure monitoring of compliance with the Code of Ethics.
"Keep in mind the code of ethics"
The notice said that in view of all this, it is advised that while circulating content on OTT platforms, various provisions of applicable laws and the code of conduct prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021 should be followed. The age-based classification of content prescribed under the Code of Ethics should be strictly followed.
