The interrogation of accused Malvinder Singh is going on.
Date, 03 August 2024… Place, Sector-43 of Chandigarh… It was 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Then suddenly there was sound of five bullets being fired one after the other in the mediation center on the second floor of the service block of the district court. There was chaos there after hearing the sound of firing. Some people reached the spot. They saw a man lying on the floor soaked in blood. He had been shot. The other man had a pistol in his hand.
People immediately informed the police. The person who fired the shots was caught and handed over to the police. The injured person was rushed to Sector-16 hospital but he died on the way. The person who was killed was none other than Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Harpreet Singh. And the person who shot him is Harpreet's father-in-law, former AIG of Punjab Police Malvinder Singh Sidhu.
IRS officer Harpreet Singh in the Agriculture Department was facing a divorce case with his wife Dr. Amitoj Kaur. Amitoj is the daughter of former AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu and is currently living in Canada. After marriage, there was a rift in the relationship between Harpreet and Amitoj due to some reasons. Harpreet then decided to separate from Amitoj. The divorce case was filed in the year 2023. Being abroad, Amitoj Kaur had given the power of attorney for hearing to her father Malvinder Singh Sidhu.
Why did Harpreet want a divorce?
Through her daughter, Malvinder has also filed a case against her son-in-law and his family in Mohali for assault, dowry harassment, death threats and forcing her to have an abortion. That case is pending in court. In the petition filed in the court for divorce, Harpreet Singh had said that he was already married and he got married to Amitoj Kaur, a resident of Mohali, in the year 2020 during Covid. This was his second marriage, so he did not take any dowry. After marriage, his wife forced him to divorce her on the grounds of mental and physical cruelty. According to Harpreet, he and his parents were implicated in a criminal case without any fault and false allegations were made against them.
Harpreet had told in his petition that his father-in-law himself was the main accused in the wireless scam in Punjab. Apart from this, he was also involved in the constable recruitment scam in Punjab Police in the year 2017. Many cases of corruption are registered against him. A case is also registered against Mohali Police on 27 January 2024 on charges of extortion and on 25 October 2023 against a government employee for using criminal force.
Harpreet was suspended
At the time of marriage, Harpreet was working as Assistant Controller General of Accounts in the Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure, New Delhi, headquartered in Chandigarh. Later he was promoted to the post of Deputy Controller General of Accounts. Meanwhile, his wife filed a case against him. He and his mother were arrested by Mohali Police. Due to the arrest, he was suspended. Harpreet said that due to these reasons he was forced to take divorce.
The matter of the third round was in the court
About 5 months ago, the court had transferred the case to the mediation centre. Both the parties had already held talks peacefully twice. On Saturday, both the parties reached the court in Sector-43 for the third round of talks. At 12 noon, Harpreet reached the court with his family and lawyer. Then after a while, Malvinder also reached here with his family and lawyer. Meanwhile, Malvinder Singh Sidhu said that he wanted to go to the bathroom. He told his son-in-law - take me to the washroom. Harpreet also went with him. But then at 2 o'clock the sound of firing was heard.
Five shots were fired
It is being told that both of them were talking to each other when the accused fired four to five shots one after the other from his gun. Two of these bullets hit the deceased. At the same time, one bullet hit the door of the room inside. On hearing the sound of the bullet, there was a commotion in the court premises. The lawyers who reached the spot caught the accused and informed the police. After which the police arrested the accused. Also, the injured son-in-law was taken to Sector 16 hospital in critical condition but he died on the way.
What did Chandigarh SSP say?
According to Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, they have recovered a .32 bore pistol from the accused. Now how the accused reached the court with the pistol is the most surprising thing. Police said that it is being investigated from which gate the accused entered the court? There was no CCTV camera at the place where this incident took place. He is also being questioned whether the accused knew this beforehand. After the incident, some people made a video of it, with the help of those videos the case is being investigated. 4 shells have been recovered from the spot. Whereas, 3 live cartridges have also been recovered.
Who is AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu?

Malvinder Singh Sidhu was selected at the rank of DSP in Punjab Police on 09-05-1992. From here, he got promoted and reached the post of AIG Human Rights. After reaching the AIG rank, his name was surrounded by serious allegations many times.
