Charanjit Singh Channi became the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh did not attend the swearing-in ceremony
Congress' stalwart Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi became the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab today. Governor Banwari Lal Purohit administered the oath of Chief Minister of Punjab to Charanjit Singh Channi at Raj Bhavan. Along with Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni also took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers of Punjab.
Punjab Congress State President Navjot Singh Sidhu, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, and many MLAs also attended the swearing-in ceremony. However, outgoing Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh did not participate in the swearing-in ceremony.
Former Congress national president Rahul Gandhi also could not reach the swearing-in ceremony on time. He reached the function ten minutes late. Congress veteran Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi became the 17th Chief Minister of Punjab. It is worth noting that earlier Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned from the post of Chief Minister.
