The Modi government at the center had launched the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in the budget of 2018 to provide relief to people from the burden of rising medical expenses. Under this scheme, the cardholder is given the facility of free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Treatment can also be availed in any private hospital on this card.

Giving information about this decision of the government, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, "The biggest decision taken in today's cabinet meeting is to cover senior citizens above 70 years of age under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This is a very big decision and there is a humanitarian thinking behind this decision.

After this decision, every elderly person above 70 years of age, whether poor, middle class, or upper middle class, will be in the new category and will get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh.

Ashwini Vaishnav further said that 6 crore senior citizens of 4.5 crore families will benefit from this scheme. Ayushman Bharat Yojana is the world's largest health insurance scheme in which about 12 crore 30 lakh families are covered. A new chapter has been added to this scheme today.
