An 11-year-old schoolboy lured a younger boy into the woods and raped him twice. The victim says the abuse left him scared and questioning his sexuality. Daniel Hancox, now 26, seduced his young victim and forced sex on him, leaving him emotionally devastated. The victim later bravely came forward after suffering years of torment.
During the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday, it was said that the accused showed pornography to the victim to convince the boy that what he was doing was normal. He raped the victim twice on a mattress in a wooded area. He also made the victim touch his penis and perform oral sex on him.
The boy went to the same place when he grew up.
Sentencing, Judge Paul Hobson said: "The impact of what you did to the victim is profound. Your actions have had a devastating effect on his emotional health for years to come. As an adult, the victim went back to the wooded area and found the mattress he had moved. He was later found by his parents and his father described him as "just shaking his head, in tears". The victim reported the abuse to police and Hancox, of Station Road, Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, was arrested.
Convicted on three counts
He was tried and convicted by a jury of three counts of raping a boy under 13, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, forcing a child to watch sexual activity, and engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a boy under 13. The court heard he had a previous good character.
The victim told the court that growing up I was confused about my sexuality and body and wondered why this happened and what would happen to me next... It didn't bother me because I thought it was normal behaviour, I didn't think it was wrong because I didn't know what was happening. When I was told about sex education, I got old memories and realised what happened to me in childhood was wrong. I started feeling isolated because of his actions. I subconsciously became aware of the environment and people around me and became polite.
The victim said she was later diagnosed with anxiety and PTSD, adding: "I felt (Hancox) had reprogrammed my brain to think that way. What he did left me sexually confused and with a personality disorder... I'm not getting any closure, but I'm glad the truth is out there. I'm glad he can't prove me a liar in the eyes of the law."
