3.5 lakh kilos of bleaching powder, 75,000 litres of phenyl and..., this is how the Maha Kumbh Mela area is being cleaned

Since the beginning of the Maha Kumbh, a huge quantity of cleaning solutions including 3.5 lakh kg of bleaching powder, 75,600 litres of phenyl and 41,000 kg of malathion have been used to maintain cleanliness in the fair area.

Sanitation drive in Maha Kumbh Mela: More than 50 crore people have taken bath so far in the divine and grand religious, and cultural gathering 'Mahakumbh 2025' being organized in Prayagraj from January 13. One of the biggest challenges of this huge event is to maintain cleanliness and hygiene amidst the huge crowd of devotees. For this, private and government agencies have made special arrangements for cleanliness in the fair area.

1.5 lakh toilets have been built in the Maha Kumbh Mela area. The Uttar Pradesh government has also taken help from Bangalore University to develop advanced oxidation technology for cleaning toilets. A large number of cleaning solutions including 3.5 lakh kg of bleaching powder, 75,600 litres of phenyl and 41,000 kg of malathion have been used to maintain cleanliness in the Mela area since the beginning of the Maha Kumbh.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given strict instructions regarding cleanliness and hygiene in the fair area. For this, a strong waste management system has been implemented. A dedicated team of officials is working continuously to monitor cleanliness. About 650 metric tonnes of waste is being processed daily at the Baswar plant in Prayagraj. 350 suction machines have been installed to manage wet waste.

To prevent pollution in the rivers at Sangam, three temporary sewage treatment plants (STPs) have been set up in Prayagraj City in addition to three permanent STPs. Medical officers, supervisors and regional in-charges have also been appointed to oversee the cleanliness program in the fair area.

According to Akanksha Rana, nodal officer of sanitation services, more than 70,827 litres of cleaning solution, 70,582 litres of phenol, 3.53 lakh kilograms of bleaching powder, 1,675 kilograms of naphthalene balls and 39,812 kilograms of malathion have been distributed to the sanitation workers. The Mela administration has also made arrangements for the stay of the sanitation workers. Free food is being provided to their families through community kitchens. The sanitation workers get their salary directly in their bank accounts every fortnigh
