John Abraham Recalls His Mother's Tears After Rajiv Gandhi's Assassination

As Bollywood actor John Abraham gears up for the release of his upcoming film The Diplomat on Holi, he shared an emotional memory from his childhood. The film, inspired by real events, features John in the role of Indian diplomat JP Singh. While discussing his past projects, including Madras Cafe, Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran, and Batla House, John recalled a touching incident involving his mother after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
John's Mother Broke Down in Tears
During an interview, John shared a childhood memory linked to May 21, 1991, the day former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. He recounted:
"One morning, as I was sleeping, a drop of water fell on my face. When I woke up, I saw my mother crying while opening the curtain. Since I am half Parsi, I asked her in Gujarati what had happened. She replied, ‘Rajiv Gandhi has been killed.’ At that time, I was just a student and couldn’t understand why she was so affected."
This deeply emotional moment stayed with John, eventually inspiring him to produce and act in Madras Cafe (2013), a political thriller based on the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, directed by Shoojit Sircar.
John Abraham’s Powerful Comeback with The Diplomat
Now, John is set to portray another real-life figure in The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair. The film tells the gripping story of Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman who was tricked into going to Pakistan, where she was tortured and drugged. Managing to escape to the Indian Embassy, she found help in JP Singh, the diplomat who orchestrated her return to India. Sadia Khateeb plays Uzma Ahmed in the film.
With its thrilling storyline and John Abraham’s intense performance, The Diplomat is expected to be a must-watch political drama this Holi!
