Senior gynecologist Dr. Rahul Manchanda told 'DNA Hindi', "We call 'heteropaternal superfecundation' the condition in which a single lady has 2 children in her same uterus, who are from different fathers. That is, 2 children at the same time, which we call twins, are in the womb of the same woman, but their fathers are different people. 

How is this possible?

Dr. Rahul Manchandha further said, "Every month, in a normal woman, an egg is released in the middle of her menstrual cycle. Normally only one egg is released. If that lady is married or has intercourse with someone, she can get pregnant. By fertilizing with one sperm, only one child will be formed.

"Sometimes multiple eggs are released in a single cycle of a lady. That means even 2 eggs can be released. So this is not normal, but it can happen. So if that lady has intercourse with 2 different people in a short duration, that means she has sex with two men in the same menstrual cycle, then both these eggs that are being released can be fertilized by different men and a child can be formed from both of them."

"These are twin babies, they grow up at the same time, they are in the same uterus, but they have different fathers. We call this 'heteropaternal superfecundation'. This has happened, there are many such cases, but it is not so common, but it can happen."

Can there be any complications?

Regarding the medical complications in this type of pregnancy, Dr. Manchandha said, "No, this does not happen normally, because these are two separate pregnancies, they behave like a normal twin pregnancy, the problems that we face in a normal twin pregnancy, similar pregnancy can occur, but such major abnormalities are not usually seen."
