Insurance Premium Link With Challans: Some car drivers repeatedly violate traffic rules. Although there is a rule of challan for breaking traffic rules. But now Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and suggested such a thing, which can reduce the cases of breaking traffic rules. The Lieutenant Governor said that the insurance premium of vehicles should be linked to the cases of breaking traffic rules registered against the vehicles. He said in his letter that this will increase safety on the roads and people will follow the rules while driving.

Compliance with road safety and traffic rules will increase

Saxena wrote, 'I am writing to draw your attention to an important issue related to road safety and vehicle insurance in the country.' He has suggested that the insurance premium of vehicles should be decided on the basis of traffic rule violation cases registered against the vehicle. This will increase compliance of road safety and traffic rules. Saxena said that a vehicle which has been repeatedly challaned for speeding, jumping red lights and dangerous driving should be charged a higher insurance premium.

More than 4.37 lakh road accidents occurred in 2022

The Lieutenant Governor said in a letter written last week that by doing this people will be encouraged to drive vehicles in a better way. According to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), more than 4 lakh 37 thousand road accidents occurred in the year 2022. Out of these, about 1.55 lakh people died. Saxena said that about 70% of these accidents occurred due to driving at very high speed. Many people also died due to jumping red lights.

Most of the cases happened due to speeding and jumping red lights.

According to the World Bank's analysis, vehicles which have cases of breaking traffic rules registered against them more often have a 40% higher risk of accidents. According to a report released by Delhi Traffic Police in 2023, 60% of the vehicles involved in road accidents in Delhi were previously fined for breaking traffic rules. Most of the cases were related to speeding and jumping red lights.

Insurance of those who break traffic rules more often should be expensive

. Saxena said that there is a greater risk of accidents with vehicles that repeatedly break traffic rules. He said that the government should make such a system in which the insurance premium of vehicles should be decided on the basis of the number of traffic rules broken by them. Insurance of vehicles whose drivers break traffic rules more often should be expensive. This will make people follow the rules while driving.

Similar system in other countries including America

Saxena told that similar system is in place in some other countries as well. He gave the example of America. There, if a driver breaks traffic rules or drives fast, then the insurance of that vehicle becomes costlier by 20 to 30 percent. He said that the same is done in some European countries as well. Saxena requested the Finance Minister to talk to the Insurance Regulator IRDAI in this matter. With this rule in place, insurance companies will not have to spend much money because accidents will be less.
