Gold Hallmarking : Troubled jewelers appeal to the government, today they are on strike across the country
In order to benefit the customers across the country, the government has made hallmarking on gold jewelry mandatory. But today i.e. on August 23, more than 350 bullion organizations across the country are on strike against the chaos spread by hallmarking. All India Gems and Jewelry Council had given this information.
Former chairman of the council, Ashok Minawala had said that the government made hallmarking mandatory in 256 districts of 28 states of the country from June 16, 2021, without proper preparation and training. This system was started to measure the purity of gold and to deliver the right product to the customers, but many of its provisions have increased the problem of jewelers. Jewelers will not accept the Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID), as it has nothing to do with the purity of the gold. It has become just a tracking system. Hallmarking gold or jewelry through this process takes a lot of time, which is harmful to the jeweler and the industry as a whole.
Many problems faced by jewelers
Expensive jewelry has to be left at hallmarking centers for several days.
There is a total of eight markings including HUID, which is affecting the beauty of the jewelry.
Gold is extracted from jewelry for hallmarking, due to which many times the jewelry gets damaged.
In this process, the jewelers have to compensate for the loss in the jewelry.
In case of any dispute even after hallmarking and selling the jewelry, the responsibility of the jewelers is fixed.
What are the demands?
HUD should be processed at hallmarking centers and not by jewelers.
The license should not be sought from jewelers with a turnover of fewer than 40 lakhs.
Apart from 256 districts, licenses are also being sought for selling hallmarked jewelry in other places.
Currently hallmarking is taking five to 15 days, it should be made available within a day.
After giving the wrong HUID at the centers and issue of certificates, the responsibility of the jewelers should be abolished.
What is Hallmark?
Hallmark is a kind of guarantee. Under this, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guarantees purity through its mark on every piece of gold jewelry. To put it simply, it is a means of providing credibility. If the jewelry is hallmarked, it means that its purity is certified. The BIS mark certifies that the jewelry meets the Bureau of Indian Standards standards.
