Since ancient times, many stories of courtesans have been heard in India, which are surprising to know.

s

One such famous story is that of Allahabad's courtesan Janaki Bai. People know her by the name of Chhappan Churi.

s

Most people think that this name must have been given after seeing the style of stabbing people's hearts with their eyes.

s

But actually, the reason for this is something else. Actually, Janaki Bai was born in Varanasi in 1880.

s

Janaki's father abandoned both mother and daughter after birth and sold them in a brothel in Allahabad.

s

Manaki came to that brothel with her daughter and became so engrossed there that after some time she became its owner.

To keep her away from brothel life, Manki trained her daughter in Hindustani classical music.

Janaki Bala was very beautiful and her melodious voice also used to cast a spell on people.

At the age of 12, a police constable was attracted to her and tried to have sexual relations with her but he failed.

In anger, the constable stabbed Janaki a total of 56 times with a knife on her entire body including her face, thus saving her life but leaving scars on her face.
