Mahabharat Katha: As soon as the biggest villain of Mahabharata, Duryodhana was born, many bad omens started happening that the astrologers told Dhritarashtra that he would only bring destruction, throw him away, so what did Dhritarashtra do and what was his reply.

When Duryodhan was born, such strange things started happening that everyone got scared. Because this had never happened before. Whoever saw and felt it, got scared. The astrologers immediately took out the almanack and started calculating the planets and stars. Then they also got scared. They told King Dhritarashtra of Hastinapur to get rid of his son. Go and abandon him in the forest. The destruction predicted by the astrologers did happen but what happened at the time of Duryodhan's birth?

Actually, to know all this, we will have to know the whole story. Vyasa had blessed Gandhari to have a hundred sons. Gandhari got pregnant on time. But when no child was born for two years, everyone wondered why this was happening. Meanwhile, Kunti gave birth to Yudhishthira. Then, when Gandhari aborted the child without telling Dhritarashtra, she saw that a lump of flesh as solid as iron came out.

Then what did Maharishi Vyas say to Gandhari?

She was about to throw it away when Maharishi Vyas came there and said, my words never prove wrong. On the advice of Vyas, Gandhari put that lump of flesh in cold water to soak it. One hundred and one embryos the size of a thumb were separated from it. All those embryos were kept in separate pots filled with ghee. After one year, Duryodhan was born from one of the pots.

Were these bad omens happening?

As soon as Duryodhan was born, he started screaming like a donkey. At the same time, vultures, jackals, and crows also started croaking. Owls were also screaming. That is, very strange sounds started coming. More bad signs started appearing. The sky turned black. The fire broke out in many places. Everyone got scared seeing this. Dhritarashtra got scared. As soon as Dhritarashtra asked Vidur and Bhishma in fear – will my son get the kingdom, right? As soon as he asked this, jackals and other animals started screaming.

Then what did the Brahmins and astrologers advise?

Then the Brahmins and astrologers calculated the time. They found that Duryodhan was born at such a bad time that he would be the cause of destruction for the entire clan and family. Because of him, there would be wars and conflicts among the people. Then the astrologers advised Dhritarashtra to keep this son away from him. Abandon him. Otherwise, keeping him close would create problems. But Dhritarashtra, who was so fond of his son, refused to do so. Later, within a month, 99 sons and a daughter named Dushala were born.

How Duryodhana got his name:

According to some stories, Duryodhana's name at birth was Suyodhana which means 'a great warrior' but later he changed his name to Duryodhana.

What is the meaning of Duryodhan?

According to some beliefs, the name Duryodhan is derived from the word 'Durjaya' which means one who is difficult to win. This name reflects his nature because he was a very tough and stubborn person.

…and indeed that prophecy of destruction came true

Vidur's prophecy proved true, because due to Duryodhan's ambitions and stubbornness the war of Mahabharata took place, which resulted in the destruction of the Kauravas. Duryodhan is also considered to be the incarnation of Kalyug, who had all those qualities which are adopted for selfishness in Kalyug

The Kauravas are finished

Duryodhan is often known for his arrogance and hatred towards the Pandavas. The sages of that time had predicted that this child, due to his arrogance, jealousy and unrighteousness, would give rise to a great war in which thousands of warriors would be killed. The Kauravas would be finished. Ultimately this is what happened.

What was Duryodhana's age?

Duryodhana and Bhima were born on the same day. The Mahabharata war took place in Kurukshetra in 3139 BC (approximately). At the time of the war, Bhima and Duryodhana would have been around 64-65 years old. When the Pandavas went into exile (12 years of exile + 1 year of incognito), Duryodhana would have been around 50-52 years old. When Duryodhana took over the politics of Hastinapur as the crown prince, he would have been around 30-35 years old.

What kind of administrator was he?

In the Mahabharata, Duryodhana is mainly shown as an arrogant, unrighteous and jealous person. However, if we talk about his administrative skills, he can be considered an efficient, but biased and tyrannical ruler. Duryodhana had full faith in his abilities. He constantly tried to strengthen his kingdom. He never backed down from any challenge.

He was definitely a skilled strategist

Duryodhana strengthened his army and relations with friendly states. He won over powerful warriors like Shakuni, Karna, Ashwatthama and Jayadratha. He is also considered a skilled strategist. He is considered very loyal to his friends, especially to Karna. However, he always resorted to deceit regarding the Pandavas. Duryodhana did not have as much support from his subjects as Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.
