Kedarnath Temple Mystery: Situated in the heights of the Himalayas, Kedarnath temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in the country. This ancient temple is more than 1200 years old. The point to note here is that no one knows the exact time of construction of Kedarnath temple, it remains a mystery. Many things have been written about its construction in historical texts and legends. But there is no concrete evidence. According to some beliefs, it was built by the Pandavas of Mahabharata. While some scholars believe that it was renovated by Adi Shankaracharya.
Built at 11,755 feet (3,583 meters) above sea level, this temple is known for its unique architecture. The temple is constructed from huge stone slabs. These have been placed without cement or any modern joining chemicals. This temple has stood firm for centuries despite severe earthquakes, snowfall and natural calamities. The beautiful carvings on its walls still reflect its grandeur.
The temple miraculously survived the 2013 floods.
When the entire region was devastated in the devastating floods of Uttarakhand in 2013, the Kedarnath temple remained safe. The areas around the temple were badly damaged in this disaster. However, the temple did not suffer much damage. It is believed that a huge stone named 'Bheem Shila' came and rested behind the temple. Which diverted the flood water away from the temple? Devotees consider this miracle to be the grace of Lord Shiva.
Major places in Panch Kedar
Kedarnath temple is considered to be the most important of the five holy Shiva temples called Panch Kedar. According to legend, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas came to seek blessings from Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. To escape from them, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull (Nandi) and disappeared into the earth. Different parts of his body appeared at different places… hump in Kedarnath, arms in Tungnath, face in Rudranath, navel in Madhyamaheshwar and hair in Kalpeshwar. These five temples together are called Panch Kedar.
The temple remains open only for six months
The journey to Kedarnath temple is not easy.. because this place is open for devotees only for six months of the year (April to November). The temple is closed during winter due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall. During this time, the idol of Lord Kedarnath is brought to Ukhimath… where he is worshipped.
