In the history of India, he was considered the most cruel Mughal emperor. He ruled India for 49 years and crossed all limits of cruelty with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's son Sambhaji. Yet he also had a heart beating in his chest. This can be gauged from the fact that when he was sent as the governor of Deccan (South) and he met a harem maid named Heerabai, he fainted on seeing her. We are talking about Aurangzeb, who fell in love with Heerabai. Let's know this love story.

This story is from the time when Shah Jahan was the emperor of India and he had sent his 35 year old son Aurangzeb as the governor of Deccan. This was Aurangzeb's second term as the governor of Deccan and he was going to Aurangabad to take up his post. On the way, Burhanpur falls on the banks of Tapti in Madhya Pradesh. Aurangzeb's aunt Suhela Bano lived there. While going to Aurangabad, Aurangzeb stopped at Burhanpur to meet his aunt. His maternal uncle was Mir Khalil Khan-e-Zaman.

We met in Burhanpur

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad has written 'Gubar-e-Khatir'. It mentions the book 'Masar-al-Umara' by Nawab Shams-ud-Daula Shahnawaz Khan and his son Abdul Hayi Khan. It is mentioned in this book that Aurangzeb was strolling in Bagh Aahu Khana situated in Jainabad of Burhanpur, when his aunt also came for a stroll with her maids. When Aurangzeb saw one of the maids who had come with the aunt, he kept looking at her.

He sat down and fell unconscious

Hamiduddin Khan has written Aurangzeb's biography. It is written in it that in aunt's house, not much attention was paid to keeping the harem women away from Aurangzeb's sight and one day he entered the house without informing. At that time, the same maidservant whom he met during the walk was holding a branch of a tree and singing softly. The maidservant's name was Hirabai but everyone called her by the name of Jainabadi.

On seeing Zainabadi, Aurangzeb sat down and then fainted. It is said that on receiving this information, Aurangzeb's aunt ran barefoot and hugged him and started crying. However, Aurangzeb regained consciousness within a few moments.

I got it in return from my uncle

Later, when Aurangzeb told his aunt about the whole matter, she said that uncle Mir Khalil Khan-e-Zaman is very dangerous and after knowing this, he will kill me. He will also kill Hirabai. On this, Aurangzeb said that he will talk to uncle in some other way and conveyed his message to Khan-e-Zaman through Murshid Quli Khan.

In a BBC report, it is said that in return, Khan-e-Zaman asked him to hand over Chitrabai from Aurangzeb's harem in exchange for Heerabai. Some historians do not agree with this transaction but everyone agrees that Aurangzeb fell in love at first sight. He got Heerabai by pleading with his aunt. At the same time, some say that he got Heerabai in exchange for Chitrabai.

There is also a story behind the change of Hirabai's real name. According to historian Yadunath Sarkar, a rule was made during Akbar's time. According to this, women of the harem were not called by their real names in public. They were named after their city or place of birth. That is why when Hirabai reached Aurangzeb's harem, as she was from Jainabad, her name became Jainabadi Mahal.

Dara Shikoh had complained to Shah Jahan

It is said that the news of this love of Aurangzeb was reaching Shah Jahan as well. Historian Ramanand Chatterjee has written that Aurangzeb's elder brother Dara Shikoh had told his father Shah Jahan about this incident. It is said that Dara Shikoh had complained that Aurangzeb was getting ruined for a maid of his aunt's house. It is said that in November 1653, Hirabai had also gone to Daulatabad with Aurangzeb. However, she died in the year 1654.
