Indian Railways: Good news for passengers traveling by train. High-speed trains will soon run on the tracks from Vande Bharat Express in the country. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Parliament on Wednesday that Integral Coach Factory Chennai is designing and manufacturing high-speed train sets in collaboration with BEML. The top speed of these trains will be 280 kmph.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw said that after the success of Vande Bharat trains under the "Make in India" initiative, Indian Railways has now started designing and manufacturing high-speed train sets.

Cost Rs 28 crore per car

Answering a question asked in Parliament, he said that about Rs 28 crore per car (excluding tax) will be required to make these trains, which is quite competitive compared to other train sets. Designing these high-speed trains is a complex and technology intensive process.

These include aerodynamic, air-tight car body, design of electrics including propulsion for high-speed application, weight optimization of train sets and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning of trains.

High-speed trains will get best-in-class facilities. Such as aerodynamic exteriors, sealed gangways, automatic doors, climatic conditions for passenger comfort, CCTV cameras, mobile-charging, fire safety equipment etc.

Undersea tunnel work also started: Railway Minister

The minister also provided an update on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project being executed with technical and financial assistance with Japan.

The work on the undersea tunnel (about 21 km) has also started, he said. The 508-km MAHSR project will have 12 stations in Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati and the entire land (1,389.5 hectares) required for this has been acquired, Goyal said.
