Petitions filed against the new IT rules should be called for the Supreme Court, the government's appeal to the Supreme Court

The Center on Tuesday moved the apex court seeking transfer of petitions challenging the validity of the new Information Technology (IT) rules in various high courts of the country to the Supreme Court. The government's petition is likely to be heard this week. A senior law officer confirmed this.

Several petitions challenging the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021 are pending in various High Courts including the Delhi High Court. The petitions pending in the High Court have challenged social media firms like Facebook, Twitter as well as new IT rules brought in to regulate OTT platforms.

Under the new IT rules, it is necessary to appoint a Grievance Officer in major social media companies to deal with the complaints of Indian users. Twitter on Monday filed an affidavit in the Delhi High Court saying it is in the final stages of appointing an interim Chief Compliance Officer and an interim Local Grievance Officer under the new IT rules. Meanwhile, a grievance officer is looking into complaints from Indian consumers, the company said.
