India's star female weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won the country's first medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Chanu ended India's 21-year wait for a medal in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics and opened the country's account by winning a silver medal. She won the silver medal in the clean and jerk in the women's 49kg category. China's Hau Zhihu won the gold medal.
On the other hand, Hou Zhihui of China, who won the gold, lifted a total of 210 kg (94 kg + 116 kg). Indonesia's Aisha Windi Kentika won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 194 kg (84 kg + 110 kg). Mirabai became the champion of the Weightlifting Championship (48 kg) in 2017. She won the title in April this year by lifting 86 kg snatch and world record 119 kg weight. She won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 205 kg.
The medal assumes significance for Mirabai as her performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics was disappointing.
