Many spices are used in the food and all are used for their specialties. Along with this, all have different prices. But saffron called red gold is said to be the world's most expensive spice. This spice plant is also said to be the most expensive plant in the world.
Major countries growing it include France, Spain, Iran, Italy, Greece, Germany, Japan, Russia, Austria, Turkistan, China, Pakistan, and Switzerland, including India. In India, it is cultivated more in limited areas of Kishtwar in Jammu and Pampur (Pampore) in Jannat-e-Kashmir.
The price of saffron in the market is between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh per kg. The reason for saffron being expensive is that only one kg dry saffron is obtained from its 1.5 lakh flowers. Saffron is also known as 'Red Gold' because it is expensive like gold.
