It has been more than a year and a half since the coronavirus epidemic. This disease has affected our lives in many ways. People are compelled to stay at home, many people have lost their jobs, lost their loved ones. In the midst of all this, children have also been badly affected. They have not been able to go to school for the last one and a half years, are away from their friends, apart from this, they have also been affected by restlessness and fear among the family members.

Effect on children's eyes

Because children are now forced to stay at home, apart from online classes, they are using TVs, laptops, tabs, and mobiles more. This is the reason that along with mental health, the health of the eyes of children is also being affected deeply. In this era of the corona, cases of myopia have increased in children.

According to US research and WHO studies and important data from China, there has been an increasing number of cases of myopia in children aged 6-9 years around the world. According to reports, the number of myopia in elementary and pre-school children has increased from 1.3 times to 3 times. Children in this specified age group registered an increase of 30%-200% in the total number of reported cases.

It has been observed that children who already had eye-related problems increased three times more than the previous data. Apart from this, children who used to consult a doctor in one or one and a half years, now they are needing consultation in less time. Similarly, the fresh cases have also increased by 1.3 times. The main reason for this problem is that there has been a decline in important activities like outdoor activities of children.

Dr. Kamal B., Medical Director, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals. Kapoor addressed this issue and explained how our eyes work. "Our brain cells can very well monitor the use of our eyes, so programming can temporarily permanently damage our accommodative myopia," she said.

Prolonged and repeated use of a laptop or mobile very close to the eyes, mainly increases the strain on the eyes and also weakens them. This problem can be avoided only when children use the blackboard of mobile or laptop screen.

The weak eye conditions that are developing in young children at this time are attributed to computer screens, mobile phones, their small fonts, and to a large extent, books. Apart from this, sitting on the laptop continuously for a long time along with attending classes.

Dr. Vineet Sehgal, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, said, “Short-sightedness can be diagnosed early and corrected at a young age, or else it leads to permanent loss of vision, known as amblyopia. Severe Short-sightedness also increases the risk of serious diseases like retinal detachment, nuclear cataracts, and glaucoma. Therefore, as soon as the condition of the corona is cured, we should tell our children to reduce unnecessary use of gadgets like computers, smartphones, and tablets at this time. Do and increase outdoor activities so that their eyes remain healthy in the coming time. Apart from this, do not tire your eyes continuously during online class or using mobile, it increases dryness in the eyes.
