A US expert, citing the experience of the Aadhaar system in India, has recommended to lawmakers that the US create a digital identity system that is inclusive and works for most people.
Prof. Elizabeth Raineris, Founding Director of the Notredem-IBM Technology Ethics Lab at the University of Notre Dame, made the recommendation at a meeting of the Congress's artificial intelligence subcommittee.
"We need to create a system that is truly inclusive and works for the majority of people," said American expert Prof Elizabeth Rainiers
. Responding to questions from MPs, Reneris referred to the experience of implementing the Aadhaar system in India.
We must avoid building digital ID systems and infrastructure in such a way that extends government surveillance, as is done under national identification systems in India or China, he said.
