Four boats carrying refugees trying to reach Europe were intercepted by Libyan coast guards in the Mediterranean on Wednesday. A United Nations official gave this information.
At the same time, the refugees said that in this sequence 20 people from a boat fell into the water and it is believed that they drowned. International Organization for Migration spokeswoman Safa Masehli said the circumstances under which the refugees fell into the water were not known. There were more people in the boat than capacity.
Maselli also said that since Tuesday, a total of seven boats carrying hundreds of refugees were intercepted off the Libyan coast. About 500 migrants, including nine children and 43 women, were deported to the beach and taken to the Mabani detention center in Tripoli, he said.
