Buoyed by the US ban on the Hong Kong issue, China has also announced a visa ban on people coming from the US. China's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that China has decided to ban the visas of US employees. The US imposed a visa ban on the Communist Party of China officials on Friday.
According to the Global Times report, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that this decision has been taken in response to the wrong treatment by the US on the Hong Kong issue. He said that the US is trying to circumvent China's law to protect national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK SAR) by imposing such restrictions but it will not succeed.
"In response, China has decided to impose a visa ban on American individuals who are indifferent to the Hong Kong issue," he said. US Secretary of State Mike Ponpio said earlier on Friday that the new visa restrictions would apply to current and former officials of the Chinese Communist Party. He held these people responsible for ending autonomy in Hong Kong.
