Health Ministry: Out of seven thousand rare diseases, only 5 percent treatment is available

There are 7000 rare diseases in the world but treatment is not available for all. Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that treatment is available for only five percent of these at present. He said that like corona, genome sequencing of rare diseases is also being done.

The Central Science and Technology Department is collaborating in this fight against rare diseases. He was addressing a webinar related to crowdfunding and TB-free workplaces on Thursday.

The Union Minister said that eight percent of the patients suffer from different types of rare diseases. He also appealed for financial contributions from all corporate groups to help such patients. Referring to the National Rare Disease Policy, the Health Minister said that a national digital portal has been created for crowdfunding. Keeping in view the concern of rare diseases, the National Rare Disease Policy was prepared during the Kovid period.

The Minister said that just as smallpox and polio have been eradicated, in the same way, a tough war has to be fought against rare diseases. Eight centers of excellence have been set up in the country. Apart from this, five diagnostic centers have also been set up.

The Department of Biotechnology set up the first diagnostic center at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi and now more diagnostic centers are being set up in aspirational districts of the country. He said that the cases of TB in the country have come down by 33 percent, while the cases of death have come down by 37 percent. He also said that even during the Kovid period, attention was not allowed to be diverted from TB.
