The case of State Police's 'encounter' with Uttar Pradesh's dreaded criminal Vikas Dubey and his operatives has reached the Supreme Court.

While two public interest litigation petitions were filed on Saturday in the Supreme Court for independent investigation of these 'encounter' cases, a lawyer has also sent a letter petition to Chief Justice Sharad Arvid Bobde.

The first petition has been filed by Supreme Court lawyer Anoop Awasthi, demanding that the police encounter with Vikas Dubey and his operatives be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Investigation Agency (NIA) or under the supervision of the court.

Mr. Awasthi has raised the question in his plea that in the name of speedy justice, can the police take up law in this way? At the same time, the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has filed a PIL demanding that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigate these incidents of encounter.
