EC cuts short campaign period in West Bengal for the very first time in history


General Election 2019: For the nine Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, the campaign ended on Thursday at 10 pm, where elections are to be held in the final phase. The official said that it was probably the first time that the election campaign has been curtailed 20 hours before the scheduled time and that is according to the order of Election Commission.

The Election Commission said that the Nine Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal will go to polls in the last phase on Sunday. , where the fate of 111 candidates will be decided by the 1,49,63,064 voters. The constituencies where campaigning has been curtailed are Kolkata North and Kolkata South, Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jadavpur, Diamond Harbor, Jayanagar (reserved) and Mathurpur (reserved) seats.

The official said that it was probably the first time that the commission invoked Article 324 in this manner, "but it may not be last in cases of repetition of lawlessness and violence which vitiate the conduct of polls in a peaceful manner," he said. This order was given after the violence in Trinamool Congress and BJP workers during the roadshows of Amit Shah. Election Commission officials said that on Sunday to ensure free and fair polling, the commission has deployed 710 companies of Central forces for almost all nine polling stations.

Meanwhile, three opposition parties, including the Congress, met the Election Commission on this order and called it a "violation" of the principle of equal opportunities and appealed to the election body to give at least half a day for campaigning.
