The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to finalize the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Rules, 2020 within three months.
The NGT has also directed the concerned authorities to consider the issue of the use of plastic bottles and multi-layered plastic packages for the packaging of carbonated soft drinks, alcohol, and other items.
A bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel has asked FSSAI to prepare the amendment rules at the earliest. The Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Rules, 2020 deal specifically with the packaging of antioxidant acids and bis (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate and drinking water.
"Till now it is believed that this case is only related to the packaging of medicines while it is also related to bottles used for water, soft drinks, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and other items," the bench said. The concerned authorities also need to be aware of these. The bench was hearing the petition of Uttarakhand's NGO Him Jagriti Welfare Society.
