Both Manipur journalists detained on charges of treason, released after admitting the mistake

After publishing an article supporting the revolutionary ideology on its news website, two journalists detained on charges of treason admitted that it was published by mistake, following which the Manipur police released them on Monday.


The police had also registered a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against Frontier Manipur online news portal Executive Editor Paojel Chaoba and Editor-in-Chief Dhiren Sadokpam.


The move was taken after publishing the article Revolutionary Journey in a Mess written by M. Joy Luwang on the website on January 8. In this, the revolutionary groups of Manipur were criticized for deviating from their objectives.


Superintendent of Police of Imphal West P.K. Meghachandra told the media, he was detained on Sunday evening as part of the investigation process. He said that both the journalists accepted in writing that the information was unclear and the article was published by mistake and no such mistakes would happen further. According to Meghachandra, he was released on Monday afternoon.

The police had registered an FIR after taking suo motu cognizance. Chaoba said in a letter to the police, "I accept that it was our mistake." There will be no such mistake in the future. He said the information was unclear.
