Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitamaran on Saturday distributed Rs 224 crore to 7.47 lakh tea garden workers in Assam. Each laborer has been given three thousand rupees. The Union Finance Minister had reached a program to provide financial assistance to the tea workers under the third installment of the 'Chah Udyan Dhan Puraskar Mela' scheme.
During this, he said, before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his desire to improve the standard of living of tea garden workers. Several schemes have been launched for him after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power.
Under the third installment of this major program, an additional amount of three-three thousand rupees will be added to the bank accounts of 7,46,667 workers. Earlier, all tea garden workers have been given five-thousand rupees in two phases. The amount was transferred to 6,33,411 bank accounts of tea garden workers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in 2017-18.
Sitharaman said that the use of DBT for various schemes has ended the middlemen. The central government will continue to support Assam's tea garden workers in the future as well.
