Sulakshana Pandit was born on 12 July 1954 in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. He started singing at the age of nine. Sulakshana sang her first song for the film in 1967. During this time he also started getting offers for acting in films. In 1975, he made his debut with the film 'Uljhan'. Her opposite actor was Sanjeev Kapoor in the film.

On seeing Sanjeev of serious nature, Sulakshana fell in love with him. At that time Sanjeev Kumar's heart was on Hema Malini, yet Sulakshana started loving Sanjeev Kumar. When Sanjeev Kumar proposed to Hema Malini for marriage, she turned it down because Hema Malini was in love with Dharmendra. Sanjeev Kumar was heartbroken after Hema refused. He and Sulakshana had become very good friends by then, he used to share everything with Sulakshana.

When Sanjeev Kumar separated from Hema Malini, Sulakshana herself expressed her love to Sanjeev Kumar, but Honi probably had something else approved. He also rejected Sulakshana after Hema refused. I have locked the door of my room and all day I just watch good movies, listen to songs so that I can face life and this world. After the passing of the parents, Sulakshana Pandit started living with her sister Vijeta Pandit.
