The film 'Udta Punjab', which exposed the drug trade in Punjab, has completed five years of its release. Even before the release of the film, a lot of controversies had arisen regarding this. After all, people liked the film very much. Actor Shahid Kapoor was seen in the lead role in this film. But did you know that Shahid Kapoor was never the first choice for this film?
Shahid Kapoor played the role of Tommy Singh in this film released in the year 2016. But the makers of the film wanted to replace Shahid Kapoor with Oscar nominee actor Riz Ahmed. This has been revealed by screenplay writer Sudeep Sharma. Recently, on the completion of five years of the film, Sandeep gave an interview, in which he has disclosed this.
According to the Times of India, Sudeep told in an interview that, 'Shahid Kapoor was our second choice for the character of Tommy Singh. We thought of casting Pakistani British actor Riz Ahmed for the role of Tommy Singh in this film. Especially after seeing Riz Ahmed's work in the Hollywood film Nightcrawler, I was so impressed with him that we were thinking of casting Riz in this film.
Sudeep further says that 'We did not think at all that we would cast any Bollywood actor for the role of Tommy Singh in the film.' Praising Riz Ahmed, Sudeep said, "Riz is a great actor. I like his movie Nightcrawler. He was not even such a big star at that time. So we could think of getting him in Udta Punjab. Ridge fits perfectly in the role of Tommy Singh. When you are casting a film, desires run like a horse at high speed.
The movie Udta Punjab was released in June 2016. The film was based on the backdrop of Punjab. The film tells the truth of drug addiction spreading among the younger generation. Apart from Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Diljit Dosanjh, Kareena Kapoor Khan were also in important roles in the film. Both Shahid and Alia's performance in this film was highly appreciated.
