A major fire broke out yesterday caught 17 schoolgirls and seriously injured 5 girls in a boarding house in Northern Thailand’s Chaiang Rai.
According to the Nationl newspaper, the fire broke down in the two-storey boarding-house of Pithakkiart Witthya School in Wiengpapao district at 11 PM on Sunday.
While only few could be rescued, many are still trapped inside. Photographs on the school’s Facebook page went viral showing firefighters struggling to quench the flames.
"The fire broke out at 11pm on Sunday (local time, 1600GMT). Seventeen girls were killed and two are still missing, with five injured," Police Colonel Prayad Singsin, Commander of Vingpatao district in Chiang Rai said.
The girls who caught up in the faire were between 5-12 years old.
Home to pupils who hail from deprived families of local hill tribes, the boarding-house had a strength of 38 schoolgirls.
