P. Ramkumar, the lone suspect in the Swathi murder case, allegedly committed suicide by getting hold of a live wire at the Puzhal central prison complex here on Sunday evening. Ramkumar was found unconscious in his cell and was taken to a government hospital where doctors declared he was brought dead. Police sources claimed that he committed suicide inside the Puzhal prison in Chennai district.
“We believe he touched a live electrical wire and died on the spot,” a source said. His body was taken to the Royapettah Hospital morgue. A post-mortem will be conducted. Ramkumar, a resident the southern district of Thirunelveli, was arrested in August after CCTV footage showed him near the crime scene following Swathi’s murder. Police have yet to file the final chargesheet in court.
Swathi, 24, was employed with Infosys’ branch at Mahindra World City at Singaperumalkoil, around 60km from Chennai. She was found murdered at Nungambakkam railway station, triggering an outrage in civil society and among political parties.
Ramkumar allegedly stalked Swathi for months and killed the techie after being rejected by her. When Ramkumar was tracked down and arrested, he attempted to commit suicide by slitting his throat.
