NEW DELHI: Olympic medalists Sushil Kumar and Sakshi Malik secured gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In the final of 62kg women’s freestyle category, Sakshi Malik thrashed away New Zealand’s Tayla Tuahine Ford to clinch gold medal for India.
Prior on Sunday, Sushil Kumar beat New Zealand Akash Khullar’s in the final of 74kg freestyle category to secure gold medal.
For the second time, Sushil Kumar clinched gold medal in international wrestling tournament. Earlier, he received the medal during 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
At the Senior National Championship in Indore, Sushil Kumar won gold medal in the middle of controversy following receiving three routs from his opponent player.
“It’s a very satisfying and touching moment for me as I have come back to the game on international level following a break of three years. I wish to devote this Gold medal triumph in #Commonwealthwrestlingchampionship at #SouthAfrica to my guru and to my Nation. JaiHind????,” Sushil Kumar wrote on Twitter.
Several other players who clinched gold medals in the freestyle category for India includes Utkarsh Kale (57kg), Bajrang (65kg), Sharvan (61kg), Amit Dhankar (70kg), Deepak (86kg), Jitender (79kg), Somveer (92kg), Hitender (125kg), Rubaljeet Singh (97kg).
Players who clinched silver medals involve Rahul Aware (61kg), Praveen Rana (74kg), Arun Kumar (70kg), Veer Dev Gulia (79kg), Mausam Khatri (97kg), Pawan Kumar (86kg), Sumit (125kg) whereas the list of bronze medallists involve Sonu (65kg), Azrudeen (92kg).
