Tulsi is worshiped in every household in Sanatana Dharma. Jagannath Krishna is not offered any servings without the basil. In Hinduism, basil is considered as the most holy basil and mother nature. In the terms of Ayurveda the medicinal properties of Tulsi plant are termed as lifesaving.
Basil has been hailed as the mother Lakshmi in the scriptures. Basil leaves from the scientific approach also is used in the treatment of many diseases. But you know why Vishnu Priya Basil is considered taboo in the worship of Lord Ganesha. Let us tell you :
According to the verses “न तुलस्या गणाधिपम्” meaning use basil leaves is prohibited in the worship of Lord Ganesha. According to the Majestic Kartik’s this verse “गणेश तुलसी पत्र दुर्गा नैव तु दूर्वाया” meaning Ganesha with basil leaves and Durga with grass should not be worshipped.there is an illustration for the prohibition of holy basil leaves in Ganesh Puja.
In ancient time Ganesh was dissolved in penance on the banks of the Ganga.Tulsi for searching for someone for her marriage in that search she reached the banks of Ganga where she saw Ganesh lost in medication. Tulsi Ji’s mind got fascinated with lord Ganesha’s appearencen and she got attracted towards him.
By this Ganesha got distracted and he asked Tulsi for her introduction and her reason of arrival to which she replied that distracting a divine yogi from his medication is a sin. After knowing about the marriage proposal of Tulsi Ganesha rejected her proposal by calling himself a celibate.
Tulsi got disappointed by turning down of her marriage proposal and cursed Ganesha that he will get married twice on this Ganesha got angry and cursed Tulsi that her child will be a monster and she will become a tree. Hearing the curse of being the mother of a monster and becoming a tree and she got infuriated started apologizing to Lord Ganesh.
Ganesh got quiet after listening to her apology. Then Ganesh ji told Tulsi your child will be a monster. He further said as basil tree you would be dear to Krishna and Narayana and will be worshipped but I would prohibit the use of you in my worship. Since then in the worship of Lord Ganesh basil is considered as a taboo.
