New Delhi: Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Wednesday paid a visit to ailing hockey legend Mohammad Shahid who is undergoing treatment for a liver and kidney ailment at a private hospital in Gurgaon. "Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports (I/C) Shri Vijay Goel on Wednesday visited ailing Hockey legend Mohammad Shahid," the ministry said in a statement.
The YAS official Twitter handle posted the pictures of the minister's visit. The ailing hockey player was admitted to a the hospital after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse. He was airlifted from Varanasi to the national capital.
Former hockey players like Dhanraj Pillay and Dilip Tirkey appealed to Prime Minister Narendra and sports authorities respectively to help the 56-year-old player. Following their requests, sports minister announced Rs.10 lakh for the expenses, while the Indian Railways, with whom Md. Shahid is employed, has taken care of expenses incurred on the treatment directly. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also sanctioned Rs.5 lakh for the former forward's treatment.
