Sonia Gandhi’s Roadshow In PM Modi’s Constituency Varanasi Halted, as she suffers from high fever


Varanasi: Sonia Gandhi has had to call off her road show in Varanasi mid-way because of high fever and is returning to Delhi. The grand rally initiated on Tuesday morning was called off in the evening, way ahead of its closure.

Sonia complained of illness to the senior party leaders accompanying her in the rally, which subsequently compelled the volunteers to disperse and make way for her exit. She has been immediately rushed to New Delhi, where she would be treated by the doctors.

The Congress president had arrived on Monday morning in Varanasi,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency, to start her party's campaign for Uttar Pradesh, where elections will be held early next year. The roadshow held in Varanasi was heavily promoted by Congress, as the party wanted to send out a stern political message from the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It was the second major event planned by strategist Prashant Kishor to build up momentum for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi held a mega-rally in Lucknow which was attended y 50,000 party workers. According to pollsters, Congress is steadily gaining momentum in the state.

Apart from major rallies, Congress has also planned 27 bus yatras in the state, which is consortium with its electoral theme of ’27 Saal, UP Behal’ (In 27 years, UP turned lawless). The last Congress government was present in the state 27 years ago. Since 1989, Congress has gradually been turned into a non-essential electoral player in the state.
