Some of us spring out of bed at the first sound of the alarm. Others of us do not. The bulldog from America’s Funniest Home would fall in the latter category. He literally surrenders with all paws in the air.

If you feel this canine’s pain when the sun comes up, don’t feel too bad. Science says whether or not you’re an early riser or a night owl is actually at least partially hardwired. But don’t go thinking that means your mornings need to be miserable either just because you tend to want to stay up late.

“Many other factors are important [when it comes to being an early riser], and our preferences are not determined by our genetics,” David Hinds, a statistical geneticist at 23andMe.
