Seven drowned in Ganga in a bid to take selfie


Kanpur: Seven teenagers on Wednesday drowned in Ganga River while taking selfie in Kanpur. The teenagers were swept away by the fast current of the Ganga.

According to the police teenagers including Satyam (22), Shivam (19), Rohit (20), Golu (20), Sandeep (19), Sachin (21) and Maqsood Ahmad (31) were bathing in river Ganga near Ganga Barrage. All of them drowned while taking 'selfi' during bathing.

The bodies of the boys, aged between 21 and 23 years, were recovered after three hours of frantic search. According to the Kohna police, the boys went to Ganga Barrage from gate number one around 10.30 am and were taking selfies on the stairs. Suddenly, one of the boys slipped and fell into the river and was swept away. The other six boys, either in panic or in a bid to rescue their friend, jumped into the river but failed to make it to the shore.

A few people who witnessed the incident informed the police, who immediately swung into action and summoned a professional swimmer from Shuklaganj.
