Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq detained in Srinagar


New Delhi: Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday was arrested by police after he allegedly tried to defy restrictions and came to support a separatist-called march in the state. The authorities have detained him for a 10-day custody at Cheshma Shahi sub-jail in Srinagar.

Mr Farooq has been sent to 10-days judicial custody. He has been lodged at Cheshamshahi where a hut has been designated as sub jail. Kashmir has been reeling under curfew for the 49th day as authorities try to bring the law and order situation under control. 

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed support for talks with protesters in the state. A policeman was shot dead this morning by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama.

Constable Khursheed Ahmad Ganai was reportedly shot dead near his home when he was going to fetch milk. He died on the spot. 

At least 70 people have been killed and eleven thousand others, mostly security personnel, injured in the clashes that erupted after Hizbul terrorist Burhan Wani was shot dead in an encounter by security forces on July 8.
