Shrinagar: Security forces could have given Burhan Wani a chance to live if they knew the Hizbul Mujhadieen commander was inside a house that came under fire during an encounter on July, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Thursday. Police and paramilitary forces were ‘unaware’ of Burhan Wani’s presence, She added.
“How can one know everything about every encounter? The police, army and intelligence agencies told me that there were three militants but they did not know who they were. I feel if they knew (that Burhan was there), perhaps we would have been better prepared and probably had looked for another chance (indicating that they might have reconsidered the decision of killing Burhan),” she said.
Commenting on the comparison between the current unrest and that which triggered due to Afzal guru’s hanging, the CM said that the then head of the state, Omar Abdullah was aware of the hanging and hence better prepared. “We knew nothing and we came to know suddenly. But, despite that, we tried to impose curfew so that children do not come out. But they went to other areas and took the children to camps and police stations,” she said.
