The partnership of Sania and Martina that took the tennis world by storm last year came to an abrupt end. The partnership that began last year in March, bagged as many as nine titles including the year-end WTA championship. However, the SanTina cleared the air announcing they will be reuniting for the end-of-season WTA Championships in Singapore in October.
The duo's 41-match win streak ended in Qatar this year after they were defeated in the fourth round at Roland Garros and in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
The world's top ranked doubles team, 'SanTina' on Wednesday expressed their intention to split. After the split, Hingis will now be playing with Coco Vandeweghe of the United States while Sania Mirza will be teaming up with Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic for the remainder of the regular season.
The duo in a joint statement said, "After three Grand Slam victories and eleven WTA doubles titles together, we have mutually agreed that we would each be open to playing with other players for the remainder of the season. Perhaps, because of our great past results, we have had very high expectations from our partnership and unfortunately did not get the results we desired recently. We would like to clarify that it was a totally professional decision based purely on our recent results." However, the pair clarified the split would not affect their "wonderful" personal relationship in any way.
Sania Mirza tweeted about the split and also about their reform putting an end to all the stories that had been doing the rounds.
