Russia: Firefighting plane goes missing after tackling fire in Siberia

New Delhi:  A Russian firefighting plane disappeared and went missing on Friday while extinguishing a forest blaze in Siberia, agencies reported. The plane was on a mission to put out a forest fire in the region.

The Il-76 jet was operated by Russia’s Emergencies Ministry. It had dropped water on a forest fire in Kachugsky Region near the city of Irkutsk and was coming back to base when radio contact was lost.

According to an international news agency, the aircraft was earlier reported to have 11 people on board, but the number was later revised to 10 people. The agency reported that the aircraft was circling territories stricken by forest fires in Russia's Irkutsk region, but failed to report back to rescuers at the scheduled time.
